“A sampling of the many neighborhood and class-based accents in New Orleans circa 1983 from the documentary YEAH YOU RITE! by Louis Alvarez and Andrew Kolker.”

Touches on the working-class New Orleans ‘Yat’ dialect, which at the time of this documentary I was trying my hardest to lose by modeling my speech on national TV shows. I lost it, and it only comes back now when I’m really mad.

I speak such Standard American English that a fellow New Orleanian once accused me of being from somewhere else.

For another look at the accents of this general region, check out Benny Grunch and the Bunch - especially the Twelve Yats of Christmas and Ain’t Dere No More.
